Guest fantasy author Juli D. Revezzo

I have an amazing fantasy author as my guest today: Juli D. Revezzo who will tell us about faery godmothers!!!! 🙂

The mythos of a faery godmother

by

Juli D. Revezzo

Faeries have been around for millennia and have given authors a wellspring of inspiration. Shakespeare used faeries in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in the form of Puck, Queen Titania, and King Oberon; even Chaucer mentioned them in the 13th century. Before any of those, the Arthurian legends spoke of faeries, giving his sister Morgan the nickname le fey which translates to “the fairy.”

Originally, these fae beings were, at least in Ireland, the gods, demoted when the population widely adopted Christianity. It was Yeats, in his book Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry and Irish Fairy Tales (1888 and 1892 respectively) and (a little later, J.M. Barrie) who changed our perception of them from gods to the singing, tramping about little imp-like beings we are used to today.

These beings also mixed with other mythologies. Specifically the type of fairy we find in fairy tales like Charles Perrault’s Cinderella, who became a benevolent mentor—the fairy godmother. She flits here and there when called to change the unhappy maid’s fate. (Or in the case of, say, Sleeping Beauty, help after the damage has been done)

I thought about all the pressure this power and responsibility must lay on the individual faery godmother. What if she focused so hard on trying to succeed, that she inadvertently messed up, more often than not? Would she get another chance? Would she succeed a second time? If so, what then? In this day and age, can the faery godmothers even be sure we still need them? These ideas mixed in my head and out popped the heroine of my new novel, CHANGELING’S CROWN, Ianthe, with her story of exactly what happens to such a godmother when she makes a mistake (or three). According to her, being a faery godmother is not as easy as it looks.

What does happen to her? Well, how about a peek at CHANGELING’S CROWN?

cover

Synopsis:

When Ianthe began her career as a faery godmother, she stumbled so badly that Snow White will probably never speak to her again. After a long suspension, she’s finally been given a chance to redeem herself…but everything on this latest assignment is going wrong.

But why?

Worse, she definitely doesn’t need an attractive mortal man distracting her from her duties. Of course, needs and wants are two different things.

Briak has had his eye on Ianthe for a very, very long time, but he’s been waiting for just the right moment to make his move. Despite the fact all hell’s about to break loose on his watch, he can’t resist the opportunity to insert himself into her earthly assignment. Can he convince Ianthe of her true calling and thereby win her heart? Or will his subterfuge ultimately cost him her love?

Merry Christmas with a freebie!

????????????????????????????????????????

The end of the year is fast approaching. The Winter solstice has passed and Christmas is looming with lights and presents and food and laughter… A great time of the year, a time for understanding and love and hope.

I want to thank all of you following my blog and facebook page, reading my stories and traveling with me on this strange path with elves and dragons and weird parasites and star-crossed lovers… You are making this possible and as this is my life’s dream, I am humbled and glad.

As I am currently up to my armpits in elves, dragons and magical portals, I thought to give you a short story with Ella, Finn and co. set in Christmas. As usual, I started out wanting to write a fun and light story – my poor heroes suffer a lot as it is – but failed. Instead you have an angsty, dark tale, but I believe there is a light burning at its core: hope.

I have just pressed publish on the tale on amazon, and will soon do so on the other platforms – but I want to give this tale to you for free. It’s my Xmas present to you.

I hope you enjoy it.

The Snare

Episode Two of Boreal and John Grey, Season II

Winter is closing in and Ella struggles to help Finn with his nightmares. The elves are biding their time, waiting for a chance to invade, and a weak John Grey might prove the downfall of the Nine Worlds; without Ella in his dreams, Finn may not be able to keep the Gates closed any longer.

With new information coming in about the bond between Boreals and dragons, Simon’s identity, the Dark Elves’ real goals and Ella’s powers, figuring it all out is a challenge.

One thing is for sure: Ella had better hurry, because time is running out fast.

Now, if you’re new to this series, let me introduce you to my world:

Boreal and John Grey is paranormal romance/urban fantasy

Centuries ago, they nearly conquered humankind. But their Gate to our world closed, leaving them out. Now the elves have found a way back.

Ella Benson, agent of the Paranormal Bureau, fights the Shades when they cross into our world, keeping everyone safe. But increasingly dangerous creatures are slipping into her city, her work partner has just gone missing, and a mysterious – and, quite frankly, hot — guy saves her life. His name is Finn and, as it turns out, he’s a natural when it comes to fighting the Shades.
When the Gates between the worlds start opening and the elves make a comeback, Ella needs a new, temporary partner. Enlisting the mysterious Finn is a no-brainer, until she realizes he is guarding dangerous secrets of his own.
Together with Finn, and the fate of the world on her shoulders, what’s Ella to do but grab her weapons and figure it all out, one way or another.

The boxset of Season One – which is composed of 5 novellas, making it one very long novel (over 400 pages) – is now on sale until the end of the month for only 99c – perfect if you want to visit this world and see if you like it there. 😉

Boreal and John Grey – Season II

Winter is on the doorstep and everything looks good for Ella and Finn. The impending disaster has been averted: the Gates are closed, the Veil is strong, and the world is safe — or so it would seem.

But what about the golden threads appearing in the air, Finn’s reluctance to share information — not to mention his dreams — and a dragon loose on the city? What is the Dark Elves’ real purpose and Dave’s role?

Something is brewing behind the Veil and Ella knows it won’t be long before the fragile peace shatters and another race against time begins.

The Hobbit VS. Boreal and John Grey… Time for Winter and elves and snow!

Winter is coming – cold wind, snow and ice, Xmas… A great season for dreaming and reading, a time for the imagination to run free. And the Hobbit is releasing soon as well – dwarves, hobbits, elves and dragons…

Aren’t you excited? I can’t wait! Even though Cyprus is still warm and sunny with no hint of snow – or elves! – I am impatient.

And I’m writing a story about elves and dwarves and dragons… In case you missed it, I am in the midst of writing an urban fantasy series called “Boreal and John Grey”. It’s fantasy set in a city with technology and wicked elves who are tying to invade our world. Although not all the elves are mean… and the dwarves aren’t very nice, either…

Anyhow. In honor of Winter, I have set the boxset at the lowest possible price (99c), and I have also released an interlude (Disguises: Halloween Interlude) and Episode 1 of the second season is about to come out as well…

So while waiting for Legolas to show his pretty face in the movie The Hobbit and for Smaug the Magnificent, the dragon, to make his appearance – come and get to know Ella and Finn, my protagonists, and I promise you lots of fun and action…

Now, let me tell you about my brand of elves, my take and my story. Let me tell you about the Nordic epics…

Because if you leave a comment, you will enter my own personal raffle and can win a copy of my boxset (ebook) containing the whole first season of Boreal and John Grey – plus a copy of my short fantasy story Dreamdancer (ebook)!!!

I have always been in love with elves – well, since I was fourteen and read Tolkien. Elves always seemed inextricably linked to epic fantasy – the Lord of the Rings variety. The wise, vegan, tree-hugging type, usually disgusted by humankind’s barbaric ways and wars.

I wanted to see a different kind of elves.

Besides, I had a feeling elves were an underrepresented minority in fantasy.

Urban fantasy tends to focus on vampires and witches and werewolves. Oh, there is UF with elves and fairies, though what I’ve seen is mainly Young Adult, but I wanted elves not only with magic but also technology, elves not wise and bonded to nature but wicked and bent on world domination.

And I also wanted them to be sexy. Legolas is okay, I guess, but let me tell you, my elves are much hotter.

I wanted there to be a reason for their differences from us humans, too, an explanation, a history.

During the 13th century In Iceland, epic poems and tales called Edda were written down. These spoke of many gods and magical creatures, among them the aelfar – the elves. Tall and pale – their name means ‘white’ – these trickster beings brought misfortune and illness, and exchanged healthy children with sickly changelings. They lived in Aelfheim – literally “elf home” – one of the nine worlds hanging on the world tree Ygdrasil.

We also know from the Edda that there were Light Elves living on the surface of their world, and Dark Elves living underground. There is a lot more about these beings, information Tolkien drew upon for his creation of the elves of Middle Earth.

Thus I went back to the source. I read what the Edda said about elves and dwarves and their world, and started again. Decided there would be a Veil, a Grey space, between the worlds, and that sometimes beings could cross. Decided the elves had crossed before, bent on conquering. The Dark Elves managed to stop them, locked the Gates. But the Light elves found a way to cross once more and take over our world.

Enter Ella Benson, Paranormal Bureau agent, who fights all that comes through the Veil – dangerous Shades crossing into our world.

But something has changed: increasingly dangerous creatures are slipping into her city, her work partner has just gone missing, and a mysterious – and, frankly, quite hot — guy saves her life. His name is Finn and, as it turns out, he’s a natural when it comes to fighting the Shades.

With the Gates opening and her partner gone, Ella needs a new ally. Enlisting the mysterious Finn is her first thought and seems to work quite well, until she realizes Finn has some dangerous secrets of his own.

Together with Finn, and the fate of the world on her shoulders, what’s Ella to do but grab her weapons and figure it all out, one way or another.

During the 13th century In Iceland, epic poems and tales called Edda in Icelandic (plural: Eddur) were written down. Two main collections exist today, the Poetic Edda, also known as SĂŚmundar Edda or the Elder Edda, is a collection of Old Norse poems from the Icelandic medieval manuscript Codex Regius (“Royal Book”). Along with the Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda is the most expansive source on Norse mythology.
These epic poems and tales spoke of the aelfar – the elves. Tall and pale – their name means ‘white’ – these trickster beings brought misfortune and illness, and exchanged healthy children with sickly changelings.
Now the Gates are opening once more between worlds and the elves are back.

Read a short excerpt from Episode 2: The Gate:

Fast food would save the world if the elves didn’t take it first, Ella thought as she paid the delivery boy and carried the boxes of chop suey inside. She closed the door on the chilly breeze and shivered while crossing over to the living room table. Mike had promised to find Finn something warmer to wear from Scott’s closet, but they’d have to go shopping for clothes sooner or later.
She set the food down and went in search of Finn. The sound of blades being honed drew her to the bathroom. Oh yeah. Finn priorities. About to fall over from exhaustion, but who cared when there were knives to be cleaned and sharpened?
“The food’s here,” she called.
He didn’t even look up, focused on his task, the whetstone screeching against the metal of the blade. Had he heard her?
Shrugging, she returned to the living room. She wasn’t all that hungry herself, not since she’d been told of Simon’s death, and even less since seeing his body at the morgue.
It was barely midday and she was bone-tired. With a sigh, she curled on the sofa and pulled the book from her purse.
Grarssaga. Simon had been dating an oracle. No wonder he’d realized before all of them what was going on. Sarah, his girlfriend, was at the hospital. Ella wondered if someone had informed her that her boyfriend was dead, torn open by a…
She swallowed hard, chased the images from her mind. She opened the book, but the letters swam before her eyes. Torn open by a wolf, according to Finn. A white, scaly wolf. The picture just wouldn’t form. Scaly? What the hell? She couldn’t recall ever reading any description of the animals of the aelfar.
Or it was all in Finn’s mind. Maybe something perfectly mundane had killed Simon; maybe the lab had been wrong about the DNA.
Yeah, and pigs could fly.

Oh and before I forget!! To celebrate with you, I set my short story Dreamdancer, featuring dreamdancers and their cousins, the elves, free today. In case you don’t have it, grab it now.

New release – episode 4 of Boreal and John Grey “The Dream”

Hi boys, girls and droids. I’ve been holed away for some time, writing. I’m hoping to finish Season 1 of Boreal and John Grey this month, and finally episode 4 is out!! (episode 5 is in the works)

Do you know this series? Do you like kick-ass heroines, angsty boys, action and suspense, and elves? Then this is for you!

It all starts with the elves. Centuries ago, they tried to invade us and failed. Now they are back.

Paranormal Bureau Agent Ella Benson knows her job: fight the Shades living between worlds and keep everyone safe. But then her partner goes missing, a mysterious guy saves her life, and increasingly dangerous creatures slip into her city. After centuries of peace, the gates beyond the Veil are opening and an old enemy is returning: the elves.

A lot happens after this. Finn and Ella become partners, and all that she knows are turned on their head. The Gates are opening; the elves are lurking behind them, ready to cross; the white animals of Aelfheim are roaming free.

And she has given her heart to Finn, even though she doesn’t want to acknowledge it.

So, without further ado, here is what episode 4 is about:

Suspicious about Dave’s nature and motivations, Ella decides to conduct her own investigation, trying to figure out if he’s a rogue Guardian or just human. Meanwhile, Finn seems convinced Ella doesn’t trust him — and Ella isn’t sure who she trusts anymore. However, her feelings for Finn cannot be denied. As her nightmares worsen, more animals cross through the Gates and the Shade attacks intensify, targeting Finn, Ella is only certain of one thing: she has to find out who John Grey is and stop him from opening a stable Gate or else the Elves will launch a full scale invasion and take over her world.

So… here you are. One more episode, and I promise you a real ending, no cliffhangers.

Although that doesn’t mean a Season 2 won’t happen… I’m too fond of my characters to abandon them that easily. 🙂
